Elisabeth Schwarzkopf: Magic Flute in English!

Uploaded by: Glenmed
Video Description:
Pamina's aria: Ach, Ich f
ühl's - Probably 1948/49 recording. My thanks to "apki10" for clarifying the words of this English rendition. All is gone, 'tis gone forever, Happy dream, t'will ne'er come true, Ne'er again return to cheer me, Hours of joy that once I knew. Oh Tamino, only hear me, Must I suffer thy disdain? If n
o longer thou dost love me, Only death can end my pain.

Class! It doesn't get much better than this, does it folks? She was more famous than Callas in her day, and it is easy to see why.

I see from the CD booklet that Warwick Braithwaite conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra in this recording, in April 12, 1948. Perfection, and I think there is an almost complete live Zauberfl
öte with Schwarzkopf, at La Scala in 1953, this time in italian (!)

It isn't that bad. Some people actually enjoy a foreign accent on native English -- e.g. Tauber, Bjorling, Gene Autrey and Tex Ritter....(Lol!)
what do you mean ... ( 2 months ago by vdhelst)
what do you mean more famou? On what grounds do you base this? Do you mean she was more popular generally? I can imagine. But if Callas was certainly more controversial then, she was famous because of the stupid press who made her a tigress and so on. Who still grasps our imagination and is known better now? Callas. That is justice.

Callas became famous after Schwarzkopf. Schwarzkopf was known internationally way before Callas was. vdhelst. This is well documented and anyone who has lived for a while will tell you this. Who grasps our imagination better? It depends on to whom you are talking.
